Ingredients
- Apples (medium, firm): 6
- Granulated sugar: 2 cups
- Water: 3/4 cup
- Light corn syrup: 1/2 cup
- Red food coloring: 1 teaspoon
- Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
- Candy thermometer: 1
- Wooden sticks: 6
Instructions
- Step 1: Wash and thoroughly dry the apples. Remove stems and insert a wooden stick firmly into the core of each apple.
- Step 2: In a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and corn syrup. Stir over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.
- Step 3: Insert a candy thermometer into the saucepan, ensuring it doesn't touch the bottom. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue to cook, without stirring, until the thermometer registers 300°F (hard-crack stage).
- Step 4: Remove the saucepan from the heat and quickly stir in the red food coloring and vanilla extract.
- Step 5: Working quickly, dip each apple into the hot candy mixture, swirling to coat completely. Lift the apple and let any excess drip off. Place the coated apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool and harden.
Notes
- For best results and to prevent stickiness, store your candied apples individually wrapped in wax paper in a cool, dry place.
- While reheating isn't recommended, you can briefly warm the candy coating with a hair dryer to restore some shine if it becomes dull.
- Present these spooky treats on a Halloween-themed platter alongside other festive sweets for a truly ghoulish spread!
- To avoid crystallization, resist the urge to stir the sugar mixture after it boils; patience is key to a smooth, glossy candy coating.
