Ingredients
- Ground beef: 1 pound
- Yellow onions: 2 large, thinly sliced
- Beef broth: 1 cup
- Worcestershire sauce: 2 tablespoons
- Garlic: 2 cloves, minced
- Thyme: 1 teaspoon, dried
- Swiss cheese: 4 slices
- Hamburger buns: 4
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large skillet or pot, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease.
- Step 2: Add the sliced onions and minced garlic to the skillet with the ground beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are softened and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Step 3: Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for another 10 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Step 4: While the mixture simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns, if desired.
- Step 5: Spoon the French Onion Beef mixture onto the bottom buns. Top each with a slice of Swiss cheese and the top bun. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Store leftover French Onion Beef mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat leftovers gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat, adding a splash of beef broth if needed to loosen the sauce.
- Serve these Sloppy Joes with a side of crispy potato wedges or a simple green salad for a complete meal.
- For a richer flavor, caramelize the onions low and slow for closer to 30 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
