Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (12 count) King's Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk or half-and-half
- 1 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional, for batter)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for cooking
Instructions
- Step 1: Whisk together the eggs, milk, alcohol-free vanilla extract, cinnamon, and optional sugar in a shallow dish or pie plate until the mixture is uniform and slightly frothy.
- Step 2: Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and allow it to melt and coat the surface.
- Step 3: Take each Hawaiian roll individually and quickly dip both sides into the egg mixture. Due to the delicate nature of the rolls, avoid prolonged soaking, which can cause them to disintegrate.
- Step 4: Place the coated rolls onto the heated skillet, ensuring they have room between them. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, turning with tongs, until each roll is golden brown and cooked through.
- Step 5: Transfer the finished Hawaiian Roll French Toast to a serving platter. Repeat the cooking process with the remaining rolls, adding more butter to the pan as necessary. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings, such as powdered sugar or maple syrup.
Notes
- To prevent the sweet rolls from turning mushy, practice the "dip and lift" technique—a quick 1-second dip on each side is plenty.
- Enhance the tropical flavor by serving these with fresh-cut mango, toasted coconut flakes, or a drizzle of lime zest mixed into the powdered sugar.
- Store any cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; they also freeze beautifully layered between parchment paper.
- For the best texture, reheat leftover rolls briefly in a toaster oven or air fryer at 350°F until the outside is lightly crispy again.
