Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs Fresh Green Beans, trimmed
- 1/2 cup Butter, melted
- 1 large Onion, chopped
- 8 oz Sliced Mushrooms
- 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
- 3 cups Milk
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
- 6 oz French Fried Onions
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Steam or boil green beans until tender-crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
- Step 2: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 8 minutes.
- Step 3: Stir in flour until well combined. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce has thickened.
- Step 4: Season the sauce with salt and pepper. Add the cooked green beans to the sauce and stir to coat evenly.
- Step 5: Pour the green bean mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the French fried onions evenly over the top.
- Step 6: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the French fried onions are golden brown. Let stand for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat individual portions in the microwave for best results, or bake covered in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through.
- Serve this casserole as a comforting side dish alongside roasted chicken or a hearty vegetarian main course.
- For a richer flavor, try using half-and-half or cream instead of milk in the sauce.
