Delicious homemade green bean casserole recipe with detailed instructions and nutritional information.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs Fresh Green Beans, trimmed
  • 1/2 cup Butter, melted
  • 1 large Onion, chopped
  • 8 oz Sliced Mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 3 cups Milk
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 6 oz French Fried Onions

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Steam or boil green beans until tender-crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
  2. Step 2: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 8 minutes.
  3. Step 3: Stir in flour until well combined. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce has thickened.
  4. Step 4: Season the sauce with salt and pepper. Add the cooked green beans to the sauce and stir to coat evenly.
  5. Step 5: Pour the green bean mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the French fried onions evenly over the top.
  6. Step 6: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the French fried onions are golden brown. Let stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat individual portions in the microwave for best results, or bake covered in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through.
  • Serve this casserole as a comforting side dish alongside roasted chicken or a hearty vegetarian main course.
  • For a richer flavor, try using half-and-half or cream instead of milk in the sauce.
