Ingredients
- Maraschino cherries with stems: 24
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: 12 ounces
- Shortening: 1 tablespoon
- Blue candy melts: 4 ounces
- Red, white, and blue sprinkles: as needed
- Vodka or cherry liqueur (optional): 2 tablespoons
- Parchment paper: as needed
Instructions
- Step 1: Gently pat the maraschino cherries dry with a paper towel. If using, soak the cherries in vodka or cherry liqueur for at least 30 minutes, or up to a few hours, then pat dry again.
- Step 2: Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and shortening in a double boiler or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
- Step 3: Dip each cherry into the melted chocolate, ensuring it is fully coated. Place the dipped cherries on parchment paper.
- Step 4: Melt the blue candy melts according to package directions. Drizzle the melted blue candy over the chocolate-covered cherries.
- Step 5: While the chocolate and candy melts are still wet, immediately sprinkle the red, white, and blue sprinkles over the cherries.
- Step 6: Allow the chocolate-covered cherries to set completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator before serving.
Notes
- Store leftover cherry bombs in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep the chocolate firm and prevent stickiness.
- These are best served at room temperature for the ultimate chocolatey, cherry experience, but a few minutes out of the fridge is all they need.
- Arrange the finished cherry bombs on a festive platter with mini American flags for a truly patriotic presentation.
- For a smoother chocolate coating, add a teaspoon of coconut oil to the melted chocolate along with the shortening.
